Blacksburg was first settled in 1745 as a settlement by Colonel James Patton, but was known as "Draper's Meadow". This settlement was wiped out by an indian raid in 1755, and then abandoned until 1798 when William Black acquired the land and divided it into lots. The settlement was renamed Blacksburg after William Black. (Hagerman - "The Heritage of Virginia")
